An Evening with Julian Lloyd Webber

World renowned musician Julian Lloyd Webber introduces his wife, fellow cellist Jia Xin and her pianist partner, Di Xiao, in a magical musical evening featuring Bach, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rachmaninov.

This unique concert is filled with unforgettable music and, quite possibly, unforgettable anecdotes as Julian takes his audience on a musical journey through his extraordinary career.
As a member of arguably the most influential musical dynasty of modern times, Julian Lloyd Webber will recount stories and anecdotes of touring, recording sessions, concerts and TV shows to link with a new presentation of rare video footage of him talking and performing with the likes of Nigel Kennedy, Elton John, Katherine Jenkins, Tim Rice, Yehudi Menuhin, Joaquin Rodrigo, Cleo Laine, Stephane Grappelli and many others.

Julian will also be inviting two locally-based young cellists to bring along their own cellos to be coached by the maestro himself in a separate workshop. Watch the sun go down by the lakeside as Torbay Symphony Orchestra performs classical pieces by Mozart and Beethoven with guest solo pianist Di Xiao.

The Torbay Symphony Orchestra has gained a reputation for its exciting performances of classical and contemporary works by a broad range of composers. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of orchestral music from all eras, for all ages.
Under the baton of conductor Richard Gonski and led by violinist Chris Eastman, the TSO enjoys a reputation for embracing all kinds of music in their concerts, from the familiar and popular to acclaimed performances of contemporary repertoire and music specifically commissioned by the orchestra from living composers.

The piano has taken her from the post Cultural Revolution backstreets of southern China to the world stage where she has performed in over 20 countries and many of the world's most prestigious venues.
A performer, educator, writer and director of the Birmingham International Music Academy, she aspires to create a bridge between Chinese and European cultures.

NEIL MAYA QUARTET: THE BRUBECK PROJECT

For many people, the sound of Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take 5’ is the sound of jazz. The late American pianist and composer did more than perhaps anyone to bring jazz into the popular mainstream.

Devon-based musician Neil Maya has put together a group of some of the finest musicians in the South West to authentically reproduce the best known Dave Brubeck recordings such as ‘It’s A Raggy Waltz’, ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’, ‘Unsquare Dance’ and of course ‘Take 5’ as well as lesser known gems from some of Dave Brubeck quartet's finest albums including Time In, Time Further Out, Dave Digs Disney and of course the iconic Time Out.

The band has performed numerous sell-out shows, including the Teignmouth Jazz Festival, numerous arts centres as well as many shows for rural touring schemes in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Herefordshire and Shropshire. The band released a live CD/DVD of the project in June 2017.

The Ronnie Jones Trio

Formed in 2011, the Ronnie Jones Trio is well-known on the thriving South West jazz circuit.

The band has performed at Cheltenham, Marlborough, Plymouth, Ealing and Teignmouth jazz festivals and supported highly-regarded jazz musicians such as pianist John Horler and saxophonist Simon Spillett on successful West Country tours – and have a Christmas residency at Bovey Castle Hotel to boot!
A broadcast journalist by training, band leader Ronnie Jones now splits his time between producing podcasts and playing jazz. He grew up in West London where he was first introduced to jazz at school by the much-respected jazz drummer Bill Eyden. Having escaped to Devon 16 years ago, Ronnie is now an in-demand session jazz drummer and percussionist with a reputation for his tasteful and creative playing. Ronnie has played at the Welsh Proms, the National Eisteddfod and Brecon Jazz Festival and has appeared on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and S4C.

Guitarist Joss Kidd is an alumnus of The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and a graduate of the BA Jazz course at Middlesex University. Joss' playing fuses Pat Metheny’s imaginative approach to the instrument with the soulful emotional connection of Joe Pass and Jim Hall.

Bass player Jim Rintoul completes the line-up. One of the busiest jazz musicians in the region, Jim has played electric and double bass around the world for the last 20 years and is one of the most well-regarded players in the West County. Jim played professionally in Japan for seven years and then toured with the legendary Drifters in Australia. Jim has also studied with some world-famous jazz bass players in New York.

Simon Spillett

Simon Spillett is an award-winning jazz saxophonist with a long list of notable achievements to his name

Appearing regularly with his own band at the legendary Ronnie Scott's, broadcasting on the BBC and recording albums that have received rave reviews in the national press. Old-school, hard swinging jazz is his line and his appearances at clubs and festivals across the UK are invariably sold-out. He's also a highly communicative champion for the music he loves, and never fails to entertain.
He will perform with The Ronnie Jones Trio on Sunday, 31 July.

La Vie En Rose play this exuberant, toe-tapping music with a swing and joie de vivre as fresh today as when Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli first conjured it from the back streets of Pigalle.

Collecting songs from around the world and fusing them all together, Skedaddle gets the party going with their upbeat, high-energy performances.

The band’s musical repertoire has roots in traditional jazz music from New Orleans and the European swing era. They explore a wide range of influences, from klezmer dance tunes to Balkan footstompers, from French folk tunes to Latin classics, with a pinch of ska and reggae thrown in when it feels right. Tailoring the material to the occasion, Skedaddle sometimes play it laidback and sweet, or heat things to get the dance floor jumping.

ZUM-ZUM means humming bird in Ameridian.

Richie is a percussionist from Trinidad W.I. (the land of the humming bird). Richie has created a dynamic music project based on the exotic rhythms of the Caribbean.
ZUM-ZUM blends infectious dance rhythms with jazz chord progressions/popular tunes creating a thrilling sound for dancers and audiences. The septet provide a high energy dance vibe featuring the excellent voice of jazz/soul vocalist Samantha Scott.

For an unforgettable vibrant experience of Latin jazz, salsa, samba and popular tunes with a Latin twist. This is the band to make that party happen!

Mama Tokus will be hosting the music sessions.

She is a comic poet & MC, hosting events and performing funny spoken word on subjects including womanhood, technology, language and, of course, music. A soulful blues, R&B and gospel-inspired performer from the Deep South West of the United Kingdom, she writes and sings her own compositions – bringing women’s blues bang up to date for the 21st century. And she injects cheeky humour into her music, making her show memorable and funny for the audience, whilst harking back to sassy female performers like Dinah Washington and Josephine Baker.

With its roots in Broadhempston, Broadband performs at community and private gigs throughout the South Hams, playing covers of rock music from the ’60s and ’70s. Members of the six piece band are David Beadel (guitar) Phil Nixon (guitar and other musical paraphernalia) Richard Bolton (bass), Pat Hamilton (acoustic guitar), Jeremy Doyle (keyboard), and Jon Maloney (drums), with guest performers appearing from time to time.

Kate Ferguson is a singer-songwriter from Devon.

With a unique soprano vocal style accompanied by fingerstyle guitar, her solo style retains the easy listening feel of folk, blended with the influences of the singer-songwriters she always known and loved (think Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and Carole King). The result is an original, heartfelt and authentic style of music.

Kate's love of singing and songwriting has always been at the forefront of her life. She is well-established in the Plymouth music scene. Her 2017 debut album 'Sweet Confusion' has been featured on BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Devon. She has been commissioned for her songwriting by organisations such as The Box and Plymouth City Council, and also works as a session singer and songwriter for independent artists.

As well as performing as a solo singer-songwriter, Kate is also part of the 1920s style speakeasy duo 'Hot Ginger' and is studying for her PhD in Music at the University of Plymouth.

Ross Morris

A Cornish classical guitarist currently based in Glasgow where he is pursuing his MA at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Ross Morris performs as a soloist across the UK. His programmes feature music ranging widely in styles and influences, from Early Baroque to 21st-century works.

Ross is a committed chamber musician, performing regularly in the Orbis Duo alongside flautist Emilia Parr and his guitar quartet, Quartet Malamatina. He also performs with soprano Ines Begg and tenor James McIntyre as Live Music Now Artists across the UK.

Sadie Horler

With her haunting vocals, Sadie Horler performs with warmth and authenticity, captivating her audience with her engaging but unaffected presence.

Setting the foundations of her musical journey by busking on the streets of Exeter at age 14, Sadie’s hard work and dedication have paid off and she has established herself as a firm favourite on the South-West music scene. Moving to Brighton in 2019 to study, Sadie has had a huge success by winning the first 'She Shore' competition at the award-winning venue Ropetackle in West Sussex.

Many of Sadie's releases have been featured on compilations such as Mahogany and AlexRainBird, and most recently she was featured on Spotify's UK and Ireland's 'Fresh Find' playlist. Her mesmerising voice has not gone unnoticed within the industry, with Universal Studios jumping at the chance to use her vocals for American fantasy television series Emerald City and Heart FM commissioning her for primetime commercials.

Saer

Performing an experimental blend of pop, folk and electronica, singer/songwriter/producer SAER, aka Simon Davis, is forging a name through live performances and independent releases.

Simon participated in The Voice UK in 2018. His appearance on the ITV hit show stirred plenty of social media and press interest, in particular his electrifying rendition of Harry Styles’ ‘Sign of the Times’ had all four judges turn chairs and has since garnered over 4 million views online.

Since the release of his 2018 debut single ‘Shadows’ SAER has independently released two more EPs and six further singles. His most recent release ‘Call Me Out’, available on Babywoman Records, is a lullaby for his daughter.

His versatility as a writer has led to many musical collaborations. SAER is a multi-instrumentalist who moves effortlessly between stormy electronica soundscapes and minimalist, heartfelt laments. Influenced by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Imogen Heap, with rousing piano and soaring vocals, SAER conjures a contemporary sound that is both unique and intriguing.

Nick & Kit are Nick McVernon and Katie Marie Webber, an acoustic duo from Marldon.

Their sound is a hybrid of country, folk and jazz, and their influences include James Taylor, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder and Suzanne Vega. Nick & Kit’s sound is mellow and laid back: perfect for a Sunday afternoon. Nick & Kit have donated their fee for ANRAN FEST to the amazing charities the event is supporting.

She grew up in a family of performing artists in Beijing and was trained at Beijing Dance Academy from 4 years old. She is the founder of DANS Chinese Dance and Performing Arts. Dan has a proven track record in delivering dance performances and workshops at various venues, such as Kensington Palace, British council, HSBC, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Birmingham Hippodrome, TED, London Chinatown, Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham City Council and Sheffield City Council etc. Dan’s team was also invited to perform on BBC The Greatest Dancer in February 2019.
